My Red Light Journey

My journey with LED light therapy started in 2019, when I was first introduced to the concept of Red Light Therapy through a brand partnership with US YouTuber and Master Aesthetician, Penn Smith Skincare. Penn recommended pairing Maysama Green Rooibos Pressed Serum with red light therapy, for its antioxidant capacity, which is similar to green tea. Since then, I have invested in red light therapy devices of my own, starting with a simple red LED light bulb from Amazon (see image above) and later a Mito Red LED Light panel, as well as the Currentbody LED Light Therapy mask – all of which I still adore today. As a woman in her mid-50’s, I have had my fair share of skin complaints, from rosacea, to vitiligo and now signs of aging. Hands down, if I had to choose one modality to take with me to my ‘desert island’, red light therapy would be it (but I would sneak in a bottle of Maysama Green Rooibos Pressed Serum to pair with it!). Rosacea is a systemic inflammatory condition, so I know that it will never be cured but the anti-inflammatory properties of red and near-infrared light have been instrumental in managing my condition. Andrei Sommer and his team of photobiomodulation scientists at the University of Ulm, Germany, have been using pulsed LED light in their research studies, which extend from skin rejuvenation and the treatment of Alzheimers and enhanced drug uptake during chemotherapy. Emulating a drug delivery system used in medical applications, Sommer’s pulsed light research confirms that pulsing aids the absorption of micronutrients in the near vicinity of the cell. The action of red light increases the volume of cellular cytosol (fluid within the cell), causing the cell to swell. When the light is switched off, the cell contracts and the cell ‘sucks’ in micronutrients which surround the cell. This transmembrane convection has been used successfully for therapeutic purposes for the uptake of drugs into the cell but can also be applied to the uptake of skincare. During pulsing, the on/off action of the light effectively makes the cell ‘breathe’ in and out and ‘digest’ nutrients that it breathes in. This improved uptake of cosmetic ingredients increases the bioavailability of skincare actives and increases the efficacy of your skincare.

Buffering Free Radicals

Aside from increased product absorption, pulsed LED light helps to buffer the build-up of free radicals produced by your red LED light, improving the efficacy of your red light device.  

Red light therapy increases the production of cellular energy, in the form of the chemical energy molecule, Adenosine Triphosphate [ATP]. ATP is essential to drive all cellular processes including cell proliferation and protein synthesis, including collagen production, which is pro-aging. The production of free radicals is an intrinsic part of how red light therapy works. Free radicals, produced by the action of red light, act as signalling molecules, which trigger cellular processes, like the transcription of antioxidant enzymes. However, free radicals are beneficial in moderation but not in excess. Our cell’s natural antioxidant defences, like the enzyme superoxide dismutase, strive to keep free radicals in check but, at high levels, our intrinsic defence systems can become overwhelmed. Excess free radicals start to inhibit cellular processes and slow the bio-stimulatory effects of your LED light device. And prolonged exposure to excess free radicals leads to oxidative stress.

Pulsed LED light helps to overcome the inhibitory effect of an overabundance of free radicals and ensures that your LED device works at optimal efficiency. Free radicals are transient with a lifetime of just a few milliseconds. When the LED light is on, we see a burst of free radicals and ATP is generated. When the light is switched off, the cell uses up its ATP reserves and the level of free radicals falls off quickly. In this way, pulsed light mitigates the build-up of free radicals, optimising the efficacy of your red light device for ATP generation.

Other Benefits of Pulsed Light

And the benefits of pulsed light therapy don't stop there. Evidence supports that photobiomodulation in pulsed mode increases light penetration in melanin rich skins, offering a clear advantage for women of colour for skin rejuvenation. Studies also support that pulsed light upregulates the production of ATP more so than continuous wave light therapy treatments and accelerates cell proliferation. For the application of skin rejuvenation, more cellular energy and accelerated cell proliferation means the production of more collagen producing cells.

Now for the nitty gritty. Does it pack a punch? Yes, it really does! The power density (fluence) of Maysama’s Pulse40 LED Light Therapy panel is above 200mw/cm2 at three inches. That is around 6-10 greater than that of a typical LED Light Therapy Mask at the outset. The power comes from forty x five watt red (660nm) and near infrared (850nm) LEDs, which support three light modes: red + near infrared [NIR], red only or NIR only. EMF is ultra low, with 0.0microT at 10 cm. 

That said, the more the field of photobiomodulation evolves, the more researchers are aligned with a 'less is more' approach. According to a more recent review of the data, the optimal window for healing and rejuvenation is between 2 and 10 Joules/cm2. Pulsed Light

If you have not used pulsed LED light before, you may be wondering what it is like. Well, imagine driving through a tree tunnel on a sunny day with your sunglasses on. The flickering that you get through your glasses is exactly the sensation that you will experience when you use your Maysama Pulse40 LED Light Panel. It is not necessary to use pulsed light with red light therapy to reap all of the benefits red or near infrared LED light therapy has to offer but, once you try it, you will take your red light therapy to the next level. 

Light is first received by the retina, which then sends signals to the brain. Whilst red and near infrared light has been found to be beneficial to the repair of the retina, pulsed light is not so well tolerated because your brain will find it distracting. This is why we recommend that you use the goggles provided and, when first starting out, use short sessions of pulsed light, until you adjust to the sensation. Even with goggles on, your eyes will still receive the effect of pulsing light, which will take a few sessions to become accustomed to.

Recommended Treatment Plan

To kick-off your treatment session, we always recommend a short (one-minute) session of continuous wave LED light – remember that an initial burst of free radicals is important for bio-stimulatory effects. Then switch to pulsed light for optimal efficacy of your device. We have put together a recommended treatment programme, which you will find in your user manual when you receive your device. The treatment programme takes you through different steps to optimise your LED light treatment regime.

We recommend that you sit a distance of 9 to12 inches (23-30 cm) from your device. 

Here are my top tips to help you adapt to pulsed light;

  1. Wear your goggles every time - it will be less distracting!
  2. Keep the room well lit – this will ensure less differential between the room light and the pulsing light, so your eyes will be less sensitive to the pulsed light.
  3. Start slow – introduce a one-minute pulsed light [PL] session initially at the end of your (6 minute) continuous wave [CW] session and build up from there. After several sessions, switch to a 3-minute continuous wave treatment, followed by a 3-minute pulsed light session. Once you have adjusted to this, you can switch to our recommended protocol; a 1-minute CW session, followed by a 6-minute pulsed light session.
  4. Turn your head slightly to the side (20-30 degree angle), so that the light is not shining directly into the retina. Then turn it to the same angle facing the other way mid-way through your session.
  5. If you find the light too bright, you can adjust the brightness by reducing the ambience button from 100% to 75, 50 or 25% until you adjust to pulsed light
