The Latest Research in Photobiomodulation - 2024 so far

With more than 7000 papers published on photobiomodulation, there is no shortage of evidence for the beneficial effects of red light therapy and the body of research continues to grow each year.

In this blog, Maysama looks at some of the latest research studies in 2024 and shines a light on new evidence and promising new applications.

Fibroblasts & Collagen

We already know that red light therapy increases the production of dermal fibroblasts, which make collagen. This study shows the more immediate impact of photobiomodulation for skin rejuvenation, with an increase in Collagen types 1 and III after just three sessions at low dose!

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a debilitating mental health condition. Recent studies show that inflammation is associated with the pathogenesis of the condition. This review of the literature suggests that Transcranial photobiomodulation [t-PBM] could be a promising, noninvasive intervention for OCD, with the potential to modulate underlying inflammatory processes.

Parkinson’s

Pre-clinical experiments have indicated that PBM has the potential to improve the clinical signs of Parkinson's disease and to provide neuroprotection. A small number of clinical trials suggest that using PBM can improve both motor and non-motor clinical signs and symptoms of Parkinson's disease and may potentially slow its progression.

Carpal Tunnel

Great news for all those suffering with carpal tunnel syndrome! Low Level Light Therapy has been shown to effectively reduce pain and the median nerve cross-sectional area in mild-to-moderate Carpal tunnel Syndrome. Check out this review for more information;

PBM, Stem cells, and Antioxidants

Combined therapy of stem cells, antioxidants and photobiomodulation [PBM] are giving better therapeutic outcomes for reducing oxidative stress, helping to treat diseases. We always knew that combining antioxidants with your red light therapy gives better results and here’s why;
